Online Stock Trading Company Jan 15, 2005 (AXcess News) Toronto - Scientists at the University of Toronto have invented a solar cell that's made of plastic which can be sprayed on and harnesses infrared light so it even works on cloudy days. The plastic solar cells are the first to be able to harness the sun's invisible infrared rays, permitting applications of the material to produce electricity in any condition, sunny or overcast.
Forex Day Trading Scientists say that the solar cell material can be sprayed on any surface and relies on nanotechnology to deliver power. Hydrogen-powered cars for instance could be coated with the material to recharge batteries. Even clothing could be coated which could potentially power a cell phone or other small device.
Financial In Market Professor Ted Sargent from the University of Toronto said the sun delivers 10,000 times more energy than people consume. Sargent believes that if 0.01% of the earth's surface could be covered with the plastic solar cell material and produce all the power we would need.
Stock Trading System While professor Sargent's theory of blanketing areas of the earth's surface is impractical, the inventor has developed a breakthrough solar cell technology that makes solar applications much more feasible.
Day Trading Stock Tip Plastic solar cells themselves are not new, but harnessing the infrared rays produced by the sun is a technological breakthrough. AdvertisementHalf of the sun's power lies in the visible light spectrum, while the other half lies in infrared.Professor Sargent's research team combined specially designed nano particles called quantum dots with a polymer to make the plastic that can detect energy in the infrared.
Financial Forex Forex Software Researchers at a U.S. university say that the polymer could be enhanced to harness up to 30 percent of the sun's energy. Current technology can only reach a 6 percent level of effective energy production. While some foreign markets, like Japan, are more aggressively pursuing solar cell technology to off-set costs, in the United States the average residential power costs are less than 10 cents per kilowatt-hour, while existing solar technology costs 25 to 50 cents per kilowatt-hour making it more expensive to use.But with the new plastic polymer solar cell coating, that could change.
