Radio station KWLC - The little basement that rocks
Radio station KWLC - The little basement that rocks
Date 10/8/1998 12:00 AM | Topic: Arts & CultureLuther's radio station, KWLC, was born 72 years ago with a broadcast of the Gettysburg Address.
KWLC grew up in the infancy of radio broadcasting. For years, it has served as Luther's source for news, music, and sports. Even today KWLC plays music that is hard to find in this area.
"Some of the programming at KWLC is better than ninety-nine percent of the stuff available in Decorah." said Jennifer Cantine, faculty manager at KWLC and instructor of communications.
KWLC plays the latest in progressive music weeknights from 10 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., and on weekends, KWLC features show stylings that range from jazz to world, Broadway to classic rock.
Saturday programming features Justin B. Newman's ('00) show "A Luther Affair" in which Newman tackles topics facing the Luther community.
Saturday afternoons Jarrod Leder (00') and his sports staff broadcast Norse football games from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
This week, KWLC is sponsoring a listener appreciation week organized by junior Nicole Cassavant to highten KWLC's visibility and entertain the Luther community. Tune into KWLC, 1240 AM for a chance to win gift certificates and concert tickets.
Despite promotional attempts, KWLC remains largely unknown to the Luther population. Hopefully, the January move to their corner of the basement formerly known as Dante's will increase visibility.
"We'll still be the little basement that rocks, but we'll be in a bigger basement." said Cantine.
With better facilities, KWLC staff will be able to participate in small ensemble recordings and live radio drama.
"We will do what we do now, but do it better." said Cantine.
If you are sick of tuning into commercial radio stations and hearing the same songs played over and over again, tune into KWLC; chances are you'll like what you hear. KWLC often sets the standard for commericial radio, introducing bands like Barenaked Ladies and Cake before they get big.
