Writer's block is the dreaded scourge of every songwriter's life. Being unable to come up with a song happens to all writers, and shouldn't be alarming when it occurs. But when it lasts for an extended period of time, it is the most frustrating thing that can happen to a composer. The typical symptom of writer's block is the feeling that once a basic musical idea is created, one can't seem to progress beyond that beginning stage. Everything feels like aimless wandering. This may seem like a weird exercise, but try creating groupings of words that might not otherwise think of putting together. He continued studies in composition at McGill University under alcides lanza and John Rea. Returning to Halifax in late 1985, he taught trumpet, theory and history at the Maritime Conservatory of Music. In 1990 he began teaching in the public school system in Halifax, primarily at St. Patrick's High School, conducting The St. Patrick's High School Choir, the St. Pat's Jazz Voices, and the St. Patrick's High School Concert Band. In 1992 He founded the Halifax-based Polish women's choir Kalina Singers. He was the conductor of the Nova Scotia Youth Chamber Choir for 2002-03, as well as co-conductor of the Nova Scotia Youth Choir from 2003-04. Through the Halifax Regional School Board, Mr. Ewer conducted the Halifax Schools' Symphony Orchestra and The Halifax Boys' Honour Choir from 1994-2000. As a composer Mr. Ewer has written for a variety of professional ensembles. His music has been performed by various groups, including Symphony Nova Scotia, the Elmer Isler Singers, Rhapsody Quintet, the Cape Breton Chorale and others. Presently Mr. Ewer is a full-time instructor at Dalhousie University in Halifax, teaching aural perception, music theory, choral techniques and orchestration, as well as conducting the Dalhousie Chorale and the Dalhousie Chamber Choir.
